AskVet is a 24/7 pet health app that connects pet owners like you to licensed veterinarians via your smartphone or tablet.

The app focuses on pet wellness by offering 24/7 live chat as well as customized care plans to help you make sure your pets are getting the proper nutrition and the right amount of exercise. Your dedicated Care Team also helps with preventive care to keep your pets as healthy as possible.

As a pet owner, I know all about wanting nothing but the best for your pets. After all, they rely almost entirely on us for their diet, exercise, and wellness, so it’s important to do what we can for them. I decided to give AskVet a try so I could connect with some real experts. Overall, I’d recommend the service, but it might not be as useful as you’d like in some circumstances.

AskVet Membership

AskVet offers comprehensive virtual pet care to help your pet get healthy and stay healthy. The biggest benefit of the platform is that you’ll immediately gain access to licensed veterinarians that are ready and willing to answer any and all questions you have about your pet and their health.

You can instantly connect with a vet through the platform and begin a live chat. There is no limit on how many of these one-on-one consultations you can have, so you can feel free to ask as many questions as you’d like.

In addition to responding to your questions, the platform’s licensed vets will work with your dedicated Care Team to create a customized health plan for your pet. They’ll gather some information about your pet and then create a personalized plan to help your pet thrive by making suggestions about their exercise, diet, and preventive care.

You’ll also get daily guidance from your Care Team with tips to ensure you’re doing everything you can to keep your pet healthy. For example, the pollen count might be high in your area that day, and that could trigger your pet’s allergies. You’d get advice on how to minimize symptoms and keep your pet healthy and happy.

Rainy Day Fund

One thing that sets AskVet apart from competitors is the Rainy Day Fund. Passively building over time, this fund acts as a pet savings account that can be used to help pay for emergency care. And the best part is you don’t have to contribute to it yourself. AskVet adds $45 to the fund each month that your subscription is active, up to a maximum of $1,000.

If you run into an emergency with your pet, you can reach out to a vet through the app and get approval to use the Rainy Day Fund. Once approved, you must take your pet to the emergency room (or pet hospital) within 10 hours. After the treatment is complete, you pay the bill as normal then submit a claim through AskVet for reimbursement.

Keep in mind that this money can only be used for emergencies that are approved by a vet on the app prior to you visiting the ER. Typical emergencies that are covered include:

  • Foreign object ingestion
  • Auto accident
  • Animal attack and/or bite
  • Severe internal or external injury
  • Poison ingestion

There is also a 7-day waiting period after you become an AskVet member before you can access your Rainy Day Fund.

An AskVet membership is a subscription service that costs $29.99 per month. That said, the platform currently has a deal where you can try the service for just $5 for your first month.

The standard pricing is higher than most other competitors out there, and there are no discounts for buying a 6-month or 12-month subscription upfront like other platforms offer. FirstVet, for example, costs $65 for six months or $90 for a whole year and gives you unlimited 24/7 vet visits.

Keep in mind that the Rainy Day Fund and personalized care plans might be enough to counter this extra cost in some cases since they’ll help cover the cost of emergency care and also keep your pet healthier.

Customer Service

With AskVet, you can reach out to licensed veterinarians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. There are no holidays or blackout days for using AskVet. So any time that you have an issue or a question, just reach out to your Care Team and you can expect a response within a few minutes.

Additionally, you can send a message to the Member Services team by filling out the form on the site. This form should be used only for general questions about the app and the services that the platform provides. Veterinarians do not have access to this form, so sending health-related questions won’t get you the help that you’re looking for.

Overall, AskVet is a solid option for virtual vet services. It connects you with licensed vets and other pet health experts through your smartphone or tablet. The vets can answer pet health-related questions in just a few minutes, and your dedicated Care Team will help create long-term health plans to ensure your pet is always at its best.

AskVet is a bit pricey compared to similar apps, but the Rainy Day Fund helps make up for this. The platform adds $45 per month (up to $1,000) that you can use for pet health emergencies that come up.

In the end, signing up for AskVet can be a good option if you plan on truly using the personalized pet plan and you want daily guidance on keeping your pet as healthy as possible.

  • Access to licensed vets 24/7
  • Rainy Day Fund to help with emergencies
  • Daily guidance to keep your pet as healthy as possible
  • $29.99/month is more expensive than competitors
  • Cannot write or renew prescriptions for food or medicine
  • Chat only, no video calls or virtual appointments
Bottom Line

AskVet is among the more expensive veterinary service apps, but it makes up for it with features that competitors don’t have. With the Rainy Day Fund, for example, you can passively build a pet emergency fund of up to $1,000 at no additional cost to you.

The licensed vets on the app work with a team dedicated to your pet to provide you with daily guidance and personalized long-term plans to keep them happy and healthy. However, as of now, AskVet does not write or renew prescriptions, which some competitors do in certain states.
